Michael was a native of Brooklyn, New York, and moved to New Jersey, living for a few years in Huguenot before settling in Pine Beach. He enjoyed taking weekend trips to Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia to visit historial places. He was a black-belt in tae kwon do and his father shared a joy in racing slot cars. Wanting to add some structure and discipline to his life, he joined the United States Army in April of 2007 after obtaining his GED. He received basic training and advanced individual training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina before transfering to Fort Polk Louisiana in October 2007 where he served as a vehicle mechanic with the 88th Brigade Support Battalion, 1st Maneuver Enhancement Brigade.
