CAMP LEJEUNE, NC (Oct. 11, 2005) -- During a solemn ceremony at the Camp Lejeune Protestant Chapel today, Marines from the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) gathered to remember a fallen comrade.

Cpl. Jonathan G. Cohen, of Cherry Hill, N.J., was killed Oct. 1 in a vehicle accident during training aboard Camp Lejeune.

"Today, we mourn the loss of a good friend and dedicated Marine," said Lt. Cmdr. Bill Appleton, 22nd MEU Chaplain. "Jonathan will always be with us in our hearts and minds, and I have no doubt he will help guard us during our deployment."

Cohen was assigned to the MEU Command Element's Force Reconnaissance Platoon, and was preparing to deploy with the unit later this year. A four-year veteran of the Corps, Cohen saw combat in Operation Iraqi Freedom and had been awarded the Combat Action Ribbon and Presidential Unit Citation.

During the service, Cohen's comrades in the Force Reconnaissance platoon remembered their friend through shared memories, music, scripture readings, and the recitation of the Recon Marine Prayer.

"He gave us all something that we can all cherish, memories," said Sgt. Brian Boger. "I will forever be grateful for all that he did for me. He was a good Marine and an even better friend."
