Although we visibly run one mile to honor and remember each fallen hero from the current conflicts, the total run represents every service member from New Jersey who laid down their lives for freedoms cause. Thousands have sacrificed to preserve our way of life and as you give tribute to a particular hero please remember others who have given the ultimate sacrifice throughout history. New Jersey being rich in the foundation of this country has given 16,408 of her sons and daughters.
Regardless of war or conflict, branch of service or method of death, we ultimately run for them all, honoring their service and sacrifice, and remembering that they each gave up a future so that we could have ours. We give tribute to them by name wherever possible and to the sacrifice of the families they left behind.
Beirut, Lebanon, October 23, 1983
They went in peace, to keep the peace,
Their cause was just, a noble deed,
Their fellow man, a friend in need,
Protecting innocents, boldly standing watch,
As if an eagle, perched high above,
A show of strength, an act of love,
Far from home and family,
A band of brothers, selfless soldiers of the sea,
Born to serve, living out their destiny,
Until that morning, the saddest day,
In mere seconds, they went away,
An act of cowards, too meek to fight them man to man,
They came in peace, to serve with honor for their nation,
They meant no harm, to any people or any land,
The price they paid, far more than their countrymen could stand,
So long ago, but yesterday, our sons, our brothers, our fathers, our husbands, our fellow warriors went on their way,
We remember and honor them today, as we did just yesterday,
We love them still and always will,
Until again they come our way...
